WASHINGTON -- The US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said Wednesday it was looking into a new class of drug for treating low cholesterol and other heart diseases.
Pfizer, the maker of Lipitor, will receive a $25 million payment from the Food and Drug Administration to conduct research on a drug to treat high cholesterol and other heart diseases. That's part of the deal that the company has been pushing for years to get Lipitor approved for use in both adults and children.
The pharmaceutical company, which made the pill in the 1980s, is trying to avoid a possible conflict of interest that would force Pfizer to pay for marketing its own version.
"There are many potential conflicts of interest between Pfizer and other healthcare providers," said Dr. Andrew B. MacDoultry, a Pfizer spokesman.
